It doesn't have to be — local guesthouses on inhabited islands have opened up a version of this trip that costs a fraction of a resort stay, without giving up the water you came for.

Resort islands vs. local islands
Maldives resorts occupy their own private islands — one resort, one island, prices to match. Local islands like Maafushi, Guraidhoo, or Thulusdhoo work differently: guesthouses, real neighbourhoods, and the same turquoise water a short boat ride from the resort zones, at guesthouse prices instead of villa prices.
The trade-off is real — no overwater bungalow, no private butler — but you still get snorkelling, sandbanks, and sunset boat trips, usually bookable directly through your guesthouse for less than a resort would charge for the same excursion.
A simple 4-day plan
- Day 1: arrive, transfer by speedboat to Maafushi (about 45 minutes from Malé), settle into a guesthouse.
- Day 2: snorkelling trip or a sandbank visit — most guesthouses run these as half-day tours.
- Day 3: a dolphin cruise at sunset, or a quieter day on Maafushi's public "bikini beach."
- Day 4: slow morning, transfer back to Malé, flight home.
What to know before you go
Alcohol is restricted outside resort islands, since local islands follow local Islamic customs — factor that in if it matters to your trip. Swimwear is generally fine only on the designated "bikini beach" areas of local islands, not the main public beach.
The free visa-on-arrival makes this one of the easiest bookings on this list — no paperwork beyond a valid passport and a return ticket.
