Sri Lanka is one of the shortest international flights available from South India — some routes are barely longer than a domestic hop — and it packs ancient history, misty tea country, and beaches into a landmass small enough to actually cover in five days without living out of a car.
Quick Facts
*Sri Lanka's entry rules for Indian travellers have shifted between free ETAs and paid ones in recent years — confirm the current scheme on Sri Lanka's official immigration site before you book.
A 5-day loop
- Day 1–2, Sigiriya & Dambulla: climb the Sigiriya rock fortress early to beat the heat, then the cave temples at Dambulla.
- Day 3, Kandy: the Temple of the Tooth and a walk around Kandy Lake, with a stop at a tea factory on the way up.
- Day 4, Nuwara Eliya: hill-country tea estates, noticeably cooler air, and some of the best-value tea you'll ever drink.
- Day 5, Colombo: a half-day in the capital — Galle Face Green at sunset — before your flight home.
Getting around
The train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (via Nanu Oya) is one of the most scenic rail journeys in Asia — book the observation car in advance if you can, seats sell out days ahead in peak season. Outside of that, a hired car with driver is the easiest way to cover this loop without wrestling with bus timetables.
What the itinerary skips
Five days is enough for the cultural triangle and hill country, but not the south coast beaches (Mirissa, Galle) as well — that's really a second trip. Trying to add beach time to this specific loop usually means rushing everything else.
Short flight, dramatic landscape changes in a single week, and food that holds its own against anywhere else in South Asia — Sri Lanka rewards exactly the kind of five-day trip most people can actually take.
