Alappuzha is where every houseboat photo on the internet was taken, which is exactly the problem. By 11am the main jetty is a traffic jam of identical boats queuing to enter the same narrow stretch of water. The backwaters are enormous — there's no reason to see them from a parking lot.
Start from Kumarakom instead
Kumarakom, about 90 minutes further south, puts you on Vembanad Lake itself rather than the narrow canals feeding into it. Fewer boats, wider water, and you're closer to the bird sanctuary if you want a detour on day one.

Picking a houseboat without getting oversold
Boats are graded roughly into standard, deluxe, and premium — the difference is usually air conditioning, an upper deck, and how new the furnishings are, not the route itself. For a first trip, a deluxe boat with AC in the bedroom is the sensible middle ground; you don't need premium unless you specifically want a plunge pool on deck.
Meals are almost always included and cooked fresh onboard — this is one of the best parts of the trip, not an afterthought. Kerala fish curry made an hour after the fish was bought at a floating market tastes nothing like the restaurant version.
What to pair it with
- Before: a day in Fort Kochi — walk the old town, watch the Chinese fishing nets at sunset.
- After: Munnar's tea gardens if you have an extra two days, about 4 hours by road from Kumarakom.
Book the houseboat directly with an operator rather than through a beachside tout in Alappuzha — the difference in what actually shows up can be significant, and a bit of research beforehand saves the trip.
