Old Goa's Portuguese churches worth the detour

It's easy to spend an entire Goa trip between beach and beach shack and never see the reason UNESCO put this stretch of coast on a heritage list. Old Goa, about 30 minutes inland from the beaches, was once the capital of Portuguese India — and its churches are the best-preserved reminder of that four-hundred-year history.

Where to start

The Basilica of Bom Jesus is the obvious first stop — and rightly so. It holds the tomb of St. Francis Xavier and is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Asia, its facade left in its original weathered laterite rather than the whitewash most other Goan churches wear.

A short walk away, the Sé Cathedral is the largest church in Asia and worth stepping inside for scale alone — the single remaining bell, known as the Golden Bell, is famous for its tone.

Beyond the two big names

• Church of St. Francis of Assisi — attached museum with Christian art and old tombstones set into the floor.
• Chapel of St. Catherine — smaller, quieter, and usually empty even when the basilica is crowded.
• Archaeological Museum — housed in a former convent, worth twenty minutes if you want context for what you've just seen.

Pairing it with the rest of your trip

This works best as a half-day detour from a North Goa base — go straight after breakfast, and you're back at the beach by early afternoon with the whole rest of the day still ahead of you. It's a good rain-day plan too, since most of the sites involve as much time indoors as out.

Goa's churches don't get anywhere near the attention its beaches do, which is part of why they're worth the detour — you'll likely have entire courtyards to yourself on a weekday morning.
